Biography:

1870-1953

Ivan Bunin was born in 1870 in the southerly Russian town of Voronezh. The main theme of his early writing was the disintegration of traditional Russian country life at the turn of the century. After he left Russia in 1920 to settle in France, he wrote the novella Mitya’s Love, a tragic story of youthful love, the semi-autobiographical novel The Life of Arsenev (after publication of the first part of which in English translation entitled The Well of Days he received the Nobel Prize for 1933), and increasingly concentrated short stories. He died in Paris in 1953.
