Born July 3, 1937 in Zlin, Czechoslovakia as "Tom Straussler". His family fled from the nazis in 1939 to Singapore and later, to India. His father was killed in Singapore and his mother later married Kenneth Stoppard, a major in the British army when they immigrated to England in 1946. He began a career as a reporter and free-lance journalist. His theatrical career began with the writing of radio and television plays. In addition to numerous plays of notarity, including Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, he has written many screenplays, including Brazil with Terry Gilliam (nominated for an Oscar) and Shakespeare in Love with Marc Norman (which won the Oscar). He has won many other awards including the John Whiting Award (1967), the Evening Standard Award (1967, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1983), the Italia Prize for radio plays (1968), three Tony Awards (1968, 1976, 1984), the Shakespeare Prize (1979), an Outer Circle Award (1984), and a Drama Desk Award (1984).
