Emil Petaja was born on April 12, 1915 in Milltown, Montana - a small lumber town in the western part of the state. He was the youngest of 10 children born to John and Hanna Petaja, and attended schools in Bonner and Missoula, Montana.

Emil Petaja (pronounced pa-tie-ya) was a science fiction and fantasy writer whose career spanned more than seven decades. He was the author of 13 novels and nearly 150 short stories. In 1995, he was named the first ever Author Emeritus by the Science Fiction Writers of America.

To date, Petaja's writings have been translated and published in England, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Sweden, France, and his beloved Finland. In 1995, in recognition of a lifetime of significant achievements, Emil Petaja was named the first ever "Author Emeritus" by the Science Fiction Writers of America. (An anthology of work of the honorees is planned.) In the late 1990's, the author was featured prominently in a Finnish documentary on the Finnish American community in the United States; the documentary was shown on Finnish television.

Emil Petaja died of heart failure at his San Francisco home on August 17, 2000. He had been suffering complications brought on from the treatment of a blood clot.
