Biography:

Francisco de Quevedo, author of The Swindler, was born in Madrid in 1580. He studied at Valladolidand at Alcalá, where he obtained his degree. He was a prolific writer of prose and poetry and was closely involved for most of his life with politics in Spain and Italy. In 1611 he moved to Italy after killing an opponent in a duel, and his life subsequently was a mixture of success and disaster; he spent some time as a prison governor and towards the end of his life was imprisoned in a monastery as a resut of his writing. He died at Villanueva de los Infantes in 1645.
