Biography:

1916-1981

John Franklin Bardin was born in Cincinnati in 1916. After an unhappy childhood he had to leave the University of Cincinnati in his first year to work full-time. He became a ticket taker and bouncer at a local roller-skating rink and educated himself by working at night, reading and clerking in a bookstore. From 1968 until 1972 he was a senior editor at Coronet magazine and between 1973 and 1974 was managing editor for the American Bar Association publications. From 1946 to 1948, during a period of intense creative activity, he wrote his first, and most highly-regarded, three novels. He also wrote more conventional crime novels under the pseudonym Gregory Tree. He died in the East Village in New York City on July 9, 1981.
