Stendhal (Marie Henri Beyle) was a soldier under Napoleon, settled in Paris in 1821, and after the 1830 revolution was appointed consul at Trieste and Civitavecchia. He wrote biographies, and critical works on music, art, and literature, but was best known for his novels, notably Le Rouge et le noir (1831, Scarlet and Black) and La Chartreuse de Parme (1839, The Charterhouse of Parma).
