Arthur Thomas Hatto has been Head of the Department of German, Queen Mary College, University of London, since 1938, and Professor of German Language and Literature at the same university since 1953. He as born in 1910 and educated at Dulwich College and Kings and University Colleges, London. He has lectured in English at the University of Berne. During the Second World War he worked in the Foreign Office. Since 1960 he has been a Governor of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where in 1970 he gave the Foundation Lecture, with the title "Shamanism and Epic Poetry in Northern Asia".
