From the publisher
Georges Simenon, who was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903, left school at sixteen, when his father died, to go to work. Starting as an apprentice to a baker, he became a bookstore clerk, shifted to police reporter on the local newspaper, and at twenty went to Paris to become a writer. Fame came quickly. Under seventeen pen names, he has published nearly 500 books, translated into many languages, and is now regarded as one of the world's leading novelists, as well as a master of suspense for his brilliant books about the famous detective Maigret. Simenon died in Switzerland in 1989.
