Biography:

Amy Tan is an American-born, only daughter of Chinese immigrants. Her Chinese name "An-mei" means "blessing from America." Her family moved constantly when she was a child and eventually settled in Santa Clara, California. All that moving around was rough on Amy, and she remarked that, "I moved every year, so I was constantly adjusting. . . living in my own imagination." That imagination helped her win an essay contest at the age of eight and from that day on she dreamed of becoming a fiction writer. Tan's mother was not happy with that decision, and when Tan switched her college major from pre-med to English and linguistics, her mother did not speak to her for six months. Amy's mother wanted her to stay away from the liberal arts and Amy believes that her "mother's English almost had an impact on limiting [her] possibilities in life. . . . While [Amy's] English skills were never judged as poor, compared to math, English could not be considered [her] strong suit." After becoming a free-lance business writer, a job she found unfulfilling, she began writing fiction as a hobby. She soon quit the free-lance business and in four months, her most famous book, The Joy Luck Club, was written. Tan's writing has carved a place for not only herself but other Asian-American writers in the literary world.
