9/13/1876 - 3/8/1941

Anderson published two early novels with the help of Theodore Dreiser and Carl Sandburg, followed by his masterpiece, "Winesburg, Ohio", a collection of stories which appeared in 1919. He received the first Dial literary award in 1921, and continued to write novels and stories. "Puzzled America", a collection of reports on the Depression was published in 1935.

Anderson was an influence on Faulkner, Hemingway, Wolfe, Steinbeck, and others. The first books of both Faulkner and Hemingway were published as a result of his influence.
