Born June 5, 1898 in Granada, Spain, Lorca -- a poet and playwright -- was one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He spent some time in New York City in 1929, and then returned to Spain. As the Spanish Civil War started in 1936, Lorca returned home to Granada. A known sympathizer of the Republican cause, he was taken into custody by the Nationalist forces controlling Granada, and was shot on the morning of August 19, 1936, aged 38.
