Roy Hattersley is a writer and a politician. He has been a Labour Member of Parliament since 1964. A Cabinet Minister during the 1970s, he became the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in 1983.

One of the most prolific writers in Britain, Roy Hattersley contributes to numerous magazines and newspapers. His weekly "Endpiece" column started in the Spectator, moved to the Listener, where he was voted Columnist of the Year, and now appears in the Guardian every Saturday. For seven years he wrote "Pressgang", a weekly column in Punch, which was revived by the Sunday Correspondent.

He is the author of several collections of essays, A Yorkshire Boyhood (a description of his early life in Sheffield), a biography of Admiral Nelson, Chose Freedom, "the future for democratic socialism," as well as numerous works of fiction.
