He won the George Polk Award for his coverage of Africa and Eastern Europe and the Pulitzer Prize for his stories smuggled out of Poland during martial law. He is the bestselling author of the novel Neanderthal, and is currently the cultural News Editor of the New York Times. He lives with his wife, journalist Nina Darnton, in New York City.
