Karl Edward Wagner (1945-1994) was one of the great modern masters of the horror novelette & novella, bringing to graphic horror a psychological complexity & reasonableness perhaps inevitable for someone trained in psychiatry. That he was a physician with the physical demeanor of a Hell's Angel translated into a literature that likewise harmonized seeming contradictions.
