Hugh MacLennan was born in 1907 at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. In 1929, he graduated from Dalhousie University, at which time he was granted a Rhodes scholarship and pursued his studies at Oxford and Princeton. From 1935 to 1945 he taught Latin at Lower Canada College, and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1943. In 1952 he was awarded the Lorne Pierce Medal, and in 1953 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
