Hesba Stretton (a pseudonym of Sarah Smith, 1832-1911) was the author of popular religous books for children, including Jessica's First Prayer, which sold over one and a half million copies. Stretton, who was a friend of Charles Dickens and regular contibutor to his journals, also co-founded the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
