Charles Collins (1828-73) was a painter and writer - and brother of Wilkie Collins
. He was a close friend of Mallais and assoiciated himself in his youth with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His most famous painting from that peroid was the 1851 'Convent Thoughts'. He married Charles Dickens
' daughter Kate in 1860, although her father did not entirely approve of this union, partly because of his financial difficulties and ill health. In order to ease his son-in-law's situation, Dickens employed him on his magazine All the Year Round
and comissioned illustrations from him for the (unpublished) The Mystery of Edwin Drood
. He died of stomach cancer in 1873.
