From the publisher
Charles Collins (1828-73) was a painter and writer - and brother of Wilkie Collins. He was a close friend of Mallais and assoiciated himself in his youth with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His most famous painting from that peroid was the 1851 'Convent Thoughts'. He married Charles Dickens' daughter Kate in 1860, although her father did not entirely approve of this union, partly because of his financial difficulties and ill health. In order to ease his son-in-law's situation, Dickens employed him on his magazine All the Year Round and comissioned illustrations from him for the (unpublished) The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He died of stomach cancer in 1873.
