Biography:

1898-1942

At the age of twenty Koltzov joined the Communist Party and enlisted in the Red Army. While still in uniform he engaged in newspaper work, and eventually became a leading publicist. From 1920 until the abrupt and enigmatic end of his career, his feuilletons were a regular feature of Pravda, the Party's principal daily. Some of his work is above the level of journalism. That his barbs—he had a caustic pen—were not directed exclusively at the Soviet Union's external enemies, real or imaginary, is clear. Koltzov was in Spain in 1936-37, reporting on the course of the civil war. A year after his return home he was arrested and is said to have died in a concentration camp.
