Biography's Source:

A prominent novelist and playwright, recipient of the Stalin prize and of several decorations, Leonov wrote a number of novellas and short stories in his youth. Some of them are exotic tales, marked by mysticism and couched in a baroque prose. Others deal with the Soviet scene in a realistic manner. His plays and full-length narratives are concerned with certain actualities of the new society, especially with the position of the intellectual. The first novels reflect the attitude of the "fellow traveler" who has his reservations about the Revolution. The later works imply an acceptance of Communist ideology but are not mere propaganda. His ventures into journalism hew to the Party line. Virtually all his novels are accessible in English.
