Biography's Source:

Serbian writer, Milorad Pavić was born into a distinguished family of writers in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1929. After graduating from the University of Belgrade, he went on to receive a Ph.D. in Literary History from the University of Zagreb, and pursued his academic career throughout Europe at the Sorbonne and in Vienna, Novi Sad, Freiberg, Regensberg, and Belgrade. In 1991 he was elected a member of the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts. Mr. Pavić lives with his wife, the writer and literary critic Jasmina Mihajlovic in Belgrade.

As a writer, Mr. Pavić is one of the leading practitioners of postmodern prose, combining language, metaphor, and narrative flow in a manner that seeks to break down the traditional way a book is read, and thus understood. In his novel Dictionary of the Khazars he accomplishes this by presenting the story as a lexicon in which the whole of the tale can only be achieved by assembling individual pieces in any order the reader desires. In a later novel Landscape Painted with Tea, Pavić presents the story as a crossword puzzle (with chapters that can be read either up or down) with a "solution" that reveals not only the ultimate meaning of the story itself, but also of that of life itself.
