1862-1936, scholar and a short-story writer, he was also a brilliant linguist, paleographer, biblical scholar and medievalist.
Full name is Montague Rhodes James. He was educated at Eton and at King's College, Cambridge, where he received many scholarships. From 1894 to 1908 he was Provost of King's College, and from 1913 to 1915 he was Vice-Chancellor. In 1918 he became Provost at Eton. He was awarded the Order of Merit in 1930.
