Uri Orlev was born in Warsaw in 1931. His father was captured by the Russians when the war broke out, and Orlev spent the years 1939-41 hiding in the Warsaw ghetto with his mother and younger brother. His mother was eventually killed by the Nazis, and he and his brother were sent to Bergen-Belsen. After the war, Orlev went to Israel to study and worked on a kibbutz in Lowere Galilee. He and his wife now live in Jerusalem with their three children.
