Hella Haasse was born February 2nd, 1918. In 1945 she wrote her first book, "Stroomversnelling" which is her only poetry. Since that year she wrote more than 50 books, most of them historical novels, but also plays, essays, and articles.
She is often called "The Grand Lady of Dutch literature" and though she doesn't like this tile, she deserves it.
Even the French government awarded her the Legion d'Honeur for her literature.
Though some people think that she often write about her own life, she denies that. Hella states that "my life is not only mine, it is also my husband's, children's, grandparent's and greatparent's life. So many people are involved if you really want to write autobiograhic" (April 21, 1990, interview in De Haagse Post)
