Mary Doria Russell was born in Chicago, IL, in 1950. She is a paleoanthropologist, specializing in bone biology and biomechanics.

She has written many acedemic publications, and her only two(at the time of this writing, 2003) novels written have been highly successful and critically acclaimed.
