Biography:

When Kenneth Millar invented low-key private eye Lew Archer, to avoid capitalizing on the success of his wife Margaret Millar he chose the pen name John MacDonald, honoring his father, John MacDonald Millar. Later, to avoid confusion with John D. MacDonald, he changed it to John Ross MacDonald, then just Ross MacDonald. Millar was born in Los Gatos, California, December 13, 1915 and died July 11th, 1983, having written more than twenty-five critically acclaimed novels. He was a past president of the Mystery Writers of America and in 1974 was awarded their highest honor, the Grand Master Award.
