Mark Richards grew up in Texas and Virginia and, prior to devoting himself to writing, spent threee years on ocean-going trawlers, coastal steamers, and fishing boats, and then worked as a radio announcer, a reporter, a bartender, a private investigator, and a teacher, among other occupations. In addition to the PEN/Ernest Hemingway Foundation Award he is the recipient of many other distinguished honors, including the Whiting Foundation Award, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Jeanne Goodheart Shapriot Fiction Prize. He lives in New York City, where he is working on a new novel.
