1898-1956

Bertolt Brecht was born in 1898 in Augsberg, Germany. When the Nazis came into power in 1933, he became an exile from Germany and sought asylum in a series of countries - Russia, France, Norway, and finally the United States, to which he came in 1941. During this period many of his plays, radio plays, and poetry were on anti-Nazi themes. He collaboration with the composer Kurt Weill on The Threepenny Opera produced the work that made him most famous. He is now recognized as the major German playwright of his generation. His major dramas are Galileo, Mother Courage, and The Caucasian Chalk Circle. Brecht was also well-known as a poet, and he published one collection of short stories, Tales from the Calendar. He died in East Berlin in 1956.
