1878–1967
John Masefield, born in 1878 in Herefordshire, England, became successor to Robert Bridges as poet laureate of Great Britain in 1930. Before his sixtieth birthday, he had written some seventy-five books of poetry of varying quality. His earlier lyrical evocations of the sea are generally considered his finest work.
