Biography:
1930 - 2009
Ballard was born in Shanghai, and was jailed by the Japanese during World War Two. He studied medicine, was a copywriter for an ad agency and a pilot in the RAF. His novel Empire of the Sun is based on his experiences as a boy in Shanghai.
